The quirks are what make books and handknits interesting. If your goal was perfection, you'd buy a machine-made sweater and become an accountant instead of a writer. ;-)

Congrats on finishing the sweater. Can't wait to see your next project! (And read the book!)

Nope, no circular needles, but the pattern doesn't call for them. I figure I'm going to probably mess that part up royally because the only other sweater I finished was a crew neck where the ribbing was done on the front and the back and then the two halves were seamed together.

As for wearing the ugly sweater -- uh, well, first of all I don't think it's going to fit. Nothing I knit ever fits.

And second, even if it does fit, it's really ugly. So I'm thinking it will probably be given to the poor and needy when I'm done.

Aunt Annie used to do that all the time. She'd knit up a blue streak (never ever using any kind of pattern) and the finished products (which were mostly baby sweaters) were immediately sent to her church for distribution to the poor.

In the last few years of her life, she was so stricken with emphysema that she became a shut-in. Her church lady friends would look in on her several times a week, ostensibly to bring her yarn for the sweaters she made for poor kids. I think the yarn visits were also to make sure she was doing okay. Church ladies are like that. :)

Very nice! Do you have circular needles to do the neckline? Let me know if you need to borrow some. God knows I have enough yarn/yarn supplies to keep AC Moore stocked for a week. Are you wearing it to the NJ conference? :)

Hmmm....

Thanks for jogging my fading memory. I do vaguely remember that maroon sweater. But I think you were younger than middle school. I think I started that sweater shortly after Mom died. That was 1997, so you were 11. And I think I knitted for a grand total of about four days that time and didn't finish the back.

As I recall I taught you to knit using that sweater and you took over the knitting, but didn't finish it either. The last thing I actually finished was a baby blue sweater vest and that was when I was a sophomore in High School.

And really, that wasn't a finished project, either, because it was supposed to be a pullover sweater, but I just didn't finish the sleeves. I did wear it for a while, though.

I have a really jaded past when it comes to knitting. Which is why I'm knitting in public now.

I remember you started a red sweater for me sometime when I was in middle school. This, "I haven't knit since I was a teenager" BS is FALSE.

I think the only thing I've ever completed are a few scarfs, and the rug in my bathroom made out of an old paisley sheet. Somethings run in the family.

You're frogging and cursing? Now you're really knitting! :)

I don't think I've ever finished a knitting project without having to rip out some large section at least once. I have a whole sweater waiting to be frogged and reknit. (The bigger the redo, the longer it sits in timeout!)

Get yourself a small crochet hook-- you can fix a lot of mistakes (dropped stitches, missed increases, etc.) without ripping it all out. Then you can move on to more glorious mistakes! ;-)

Hugs! Hang in there -- it does get easier!

Yeah, well, I do have my mother's knitting pattern for this baby sweater that dates back to the 1940s. She knitted one of those sweaters for each of her kids and all of her grandchildren. She's not around to knit anything for the next generation, so....

Not that there are any grandbabies in the near future, mind you.

Breathe. The Amish (or some simiilarly oriented group) have a tradition that when they're making a quilt, they intentionally turn one square to the wrong side, on the theory that nothing in our world is perfect; only God can make perfect things, so we shouldn't even bother trying. :) That's why most of the stuff I knit/crochet looks the way it does. Fortunately I've been doing this so long that finding my mistakes is like playing Where's Waldo. :) But trust me, they're there.

And now you can see the value of the ball winder I was telling you about; you could've balled up the extra yarn and gotten right back into business. :) I can't fathom how people worked before there was pull-skein yarn. Tragic. (Says the woman who's seriously considering trying a spinning class.)

I'm glad you didn't throw in the towel! If you try to mail me that yarn and needles, I'm going to mark it Return to Sender until you make this thing! Besides, some day you might have a grandbaby, and then you'll appreciate making all sorts of gorgeous little baby clothes! (Or are you knitting in preparation for that?!)
